4- TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
1- INSTALLATION
Before proceding with installation, please check that your machine
has at least the configuration recommended in paragraph 2.
1.1- Installation on PC and compatible
Run Windows.
Insert the disk in your CD-Rom.
Run Windows File Manager in Windows 3.X or clic on the icon "My Computer"on the desktop.
Select the CD-Rom drive (usually D:)
Run the INSTALL.EXE programme and follow the directions on the screen.
Once the installation is complete, the "Interactive Wave" icon
will appear. Click on it!
1.2- Unsinstallation
At the end of each installation, the installer creates an "installation
result" document in the IWave work group. This document contains a
list of all the modifications made to your system after an installation
(not including QuickTime for Windows(tm) ).
Furthermore, you can always uninstall IWave by running INSTALL.EXE
again. This process returns the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files to their original
state and deletes all files copied onto the disk. Finally, the CTL3DV2.DLL
file is necessary for the installer. If it doesn't find it in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory it will recopy it there.
1.3- Remarks on installation
By default, this software will propose installing QuickTime for Windows
2.0.3. We suggest you do it even if you have already installed QuickTime
for Windows because this version cleans up your Hard Drive, removing all
old versions.
2 - CONFIGURATION
- Firstly, the minimum configuration allows the reading of Interactive
Wave with somewhat reduced performance.
- The second configuration is strongly recommended and allows optimum
use.
2.1 Minimum configuration
MPC1 standard PC computer:
- 386 SX processor at 25 Mhz
- Video display: 640 x 480 pixels in 256 colours
- "Soundblaster" or compatible sound card
- Windows 3.1
- 4 Mb of installed RAM (see "For Your Information")
- CD-Rom drive (150 Kb/s)
2.2 Recommended configuration
MPC2 standard PC computer:
- 486 SX processor at 25 Mhz
- 8 Mb (or more) of installed RAM (with at least 6Mb available under
Windows)
- Double speed CD-Rom drive (300 Kb/s)
- Video display: 640 x 480 in thousands of colours.
3 - FOR YOUR INFORMATION
3.1 CD-Rom drive
- You will get the greatest satisfaction from your CD-Rom if you consult
it on a double speed CD-Rom drive (transfer speed of 300 Kilobytes per second).
A quadruple speed drive is even better.
3.2 RAM
- To be correctly executed, this CD-Rom requires 4Mb of RAM available
under Windows. Each time the software is run, it verifies the amount of
RAM available on your computer. Given the memory occupied by the operating
system, your computer should have at least 6 Mb of installed RAM.
- It is, nevertheless possible to consult this CD-Rom with only 4Mb
of RAM. You must, in this case, add the Windows virtual memory (Control
Panel and 386 expanded memory); in this case the software will run much
more slowly.
- You must nevertheless have a minimum of 4Mb of RAM available before
running the CD-Rom; so watch out for Windows utilities and other drivers
run from DOS (SMARTDRV.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT, VDISK.SYS in the CONGIG.SYS
and, generally, any driver or programme which may reserve a considerable
quantity of memory which is not then available in WINDOWS).
- If you encounter a problem, check the "Total Memory Available"by typing MEM in DOS before running Windows. .
3.3 Video display
- Interactive Wave requires a VGA compatible graphics card functioning
at least in 640 x 480 point mode in 256 colours. In theory, you can go up
to 1280 x 1024 on a large screen, but, given our experience of certain graphics
cards, we wouldn't advise it.
- If your video card does not have the required minimum 640 x 480 points
in 256 colours, the installation programme will tell you that you do not
have the necessary configuration but will continue to function (at your
own risk!)
- If you can display in thousands of colours, change to this mode. The
QuickTime videos look much better in this resolution.
- However, the "millions of colours" mode risks slowing the
application (or even crashing it completely) and does not enhance the display
any more than the "thousands of colours" resolution.
- There may be a few compatibility problems with certain graphics cards.
These particular cases are explained in the section 4.
- In general, try and get hold of the latest available drivers for your
graphics card.
3.4 Digital video
- The video films in Interactive Wave are made possible by the use of
digital video technology developed by Apple - QuickTime version 2.0.3.
3.5 Sound card
- The sounds in Interactive Wave are of a quality of 11 or 22 Khz.
- Any "SoundBlaster" compatible sound card is sufficient to
reconstitute the sound data. However, the choice of sound card and of quality
acoustic speakers will directly influence the final quality. Furthermore,
problems of chopped sound have been noticed with 8 bit sound cards. We highly
recommend you use a 16 bit card.
- Note : Interactive Wave uses both of your machine's sound tracks.
The test carried out at the start of the programme will tell you whether
these two tracks are available, and will allow you to test them. If your
configuration does not permit you to use track 2, it shouldn't interfere
too much with your enjoyment of Interactive Wave. In fact, the second track
is reserved for music and ambiance while the first contains the voices.
At worst, you will just hear the voices unaccompanied.
3.6- Execution speed
Multimedia demands maximum power from the computer. If the consultation
of this CD-Rom seems too slow, start by
- disactivating programmes in the computer's memory.
- Close all other applications which may run simultaneously.
- Make sure your disk is not fragmented
3.7- Keyboard functions
3.7.1 The "skip" function
- When you are consulting an ad, you may interrupt the message at any
moment to return to the main menu by pressing the space bar.
- Similarly, to interrupt the I-Wave generic or the introduction to
an article, click in the middle of the screen or press the space
bar.
- If, by coincidence, the skip takes place during the transition between
two screens, only this transition will be interrupted. In this case, press
the space bar again.
3.7.2 Adjusting the volume
At any time during consultation you may adjust the volume by using the
keys 0 (sound off) to 7 (maximum volume).
3.7.3 Return to the main menu
Similarly, you can return to the main menu at any time by pressing the backspace
key.
3.7.4 Keyboard navigation
The "right", "left" and "up"arrows produce the same effects as the arrows on the on screen menu
bar : you can use them to move to the next screen or previous screen or
to go back to the previous level.
4 - TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
- Careful! This CD-Rom is fragile. We advise you to take great care
of it, as stains and scratches can pose problems.
- If your disk gets stuck on a certain article, immediately check the
surface of your disk and, if necessary, clean it with a soft cloth dipped
in alcohol. Let it dry before reloading.
- If you only have 4MB of installed RAM available on your PC, the application
may crash at certain points. See paragraph 3.2 : "RAM"
- On some speed graphics cards, you may have to disable the option "DeviceBitmap"by switching it to off in a ".ini" file. Please refer to your
graphic card documentation.
- With a 8 bits Sound card, the sound is often chopped. It's better
to use a 16 bits Sound card.
- In general, please use the latest drivers for your hardware.
